All this trouble for a bed?!

Wow, so Tyler came down this weekend to pick up our bed...and that is an interesting story....

Several years ago, Tyler's parents bought him a new bed (they got a super good deal they just couldn't pass up). It's a nice, king size bed and he tells me it is super comfortable. When his parents bought it, they told him it was his to take with him when he got married.

Have you ever tried to transport a bed across the country? It's a bit of a challenge. As we looked at options, we quickly realized it was going to be cheaper and easier just to buy a bed up in Idaho, rather than try to transport his bed from South Carolina.

Then a happy day came...Tyler's parents' home teacher said that he would be coming out to Utah to help his sons with a housing project (both of his sons are getting married soon and were looking at buying a house together and turning it into a duplex). He told Tyler's parents that he might have room in his truck to bring the bed with him.

The key word, of course, was "might." He kept telling us we'd know with in the next few days. Thursday night Tyler's parents took the bed to his house so he could put it in the truck, and he told them he wasn't going to pack everything until the next morning, but he thought there was only a 33% chance that the bed would fit. When I heard that, my heart sunk a little. Curses! Later that night, he'd changed his mind and was almost positive he could bring the bed.

The final verdict came Friday morning. Yes, the bed fit and was on it's way to Utah!

Next dilemma: How to get the bed from Utah to Idaho. Tyler's little car wouldn't be able to take it, and I didn't have a truck to offer. We started looking at U-Haul trailers and trucks and vans...but actually we ended up renting a pick-up truck from a car rental place in Rexburg.

So Tyler drove this huge truck (F-250 Ford something or other, for anyone who cares) down to Utah to pick up the bed. Only...in the rush to get the bed ready for the trip...somehow the runners got forgotten. So actually we only have the mattress and the box springs at this point, but that is certainly better than nothing!

Tyler's parents' home teacher wouldn't be arriving until Sunday night, so that meant Tyler and I could play all weekend. We kept busy! One of my primary kids got baptized Saturday morning, and then we ran errands and that afternoon my dad took my sister, two of the people he works with (and that I technically work with too...since we all work at the same place), Tyler, and I out shooting. I'm not a huge fan, but the others seemed to have fun.

Saturday night Tyler and I downloaded a free photo editing program off-line to see if we couldn't put together wedding announcements all by ourselves. We had fun playing around with the program and in the end felt we had made ourselves a pretty darn good announcement. (We're running into some problems with it now, but hopefully we can work out the bugs.)

Sunday night rolled around all too quickly and at 8pm, it was time to drive to Orem and pick up the mattress and box spring. Everything took longer than we thought. The bed of the truck wasn't wide enough for the mattress to lie down flat, so we had to run to Wal-Mart (I know, we are going to burn forever as sinners...) to buy some...I forget what they are called...things...to tie the mattress and box springs securly into the back of the truck. Then Tyler was taking a girl who had needed a last-minute ride back up to Rexburg with him, and she wasn't ready on time. And then she had this bike to bring and we had to be creative about getting it into the truck. The whole back of the cab was loaded with other stuff for the apartment (a coffee table, a desk, etc.), and the back was filled up with the mattress...so we really did have to get creative.

Tyler's sister was a life-saver all night long. She drove us to Wal-Mart because we only had 700 miles to put on the truck without having to pay tons of extra. Then she had rope for us to tie the bike to the back of the truck and she had a knife to cut the rope and a water bottle for Tyler to take on the trip with him...and she was the one to get me back to my house after we got everything sorted out. Hurray for helpful Meagan!

Tyler finally left for Idaho at about 11pm on Sunday night. His awesome roommate helped him unload the stuff when he arrived in Rexburg (it was probably 2:30 ish in the morning) so that he could return the truck first thing Monday morning. Poor Tyler. He called me at 4 am Monday morning to let me know he was safe in Rexburg, everything was unloaded, and he was going to bed...3 hours of sleep before his first class. Yuck.
